Home Inspections The Villages, Sumterville, and Sumter County
Sumter County was created in 1853 from a portion of the original Marion County and was named in honor of American Revolutionary War General Thomas Sumter. For much of its history Sumter County was extremely rural and was nicknamed “Hog County” because of its large population of wild hogs and opportunities for hog hunting, still a favorite pastime for many residents in the county’s more rural areas. In recent years, Sumter County’s population expanded rapidly with the expansion of The Villages planned retirement community, much of which is located within Sumter County. The Villages is both the largest planned retirement community in the United States and the largest community in Sumter County, making the county the home with the oldest median age of any county in the United States.
