Pasco County is located on the Gulf of Mexico in the Tampa Bay area and was created in 1887 and named after United States Senator, Samuel Pasco. When the County was first formed, citrus was a very important industry to the area, however this industry experienced a serious decline following a freeze in 1895. Several large sawmills then began operating in the county in the early part of the twentieth century. In 1920, during the Florida land boom, silent screen star Thomas Meighan and golfer Gene Sarazen made New Port Richey their winter home. Meighan attempted to bring other Hollywood figures to the city. The county has recently experienced significant population growth since the 1960s, beginning along the Gulf coast and expanding out to areas north of Tampa. Pasco County is proud to be a part of a nine-county region referred to as the “Nature Coast” and has more than 100 square miles of managed recreational facilities, including parks, four artificial reefs, more than 25 golf courses, and three State-designated canoe trails. If you love endless possibilities to enjoy the great outdoors and nature, Pasco County is the place for you.
