About Orlando and Orange County

Orange County was created in 1845 when Florida became a state. The original area that was Orange County was made up of today’s Osceola County, Seminole County, Lake County, and Volusia County. The county was named after the fruit which was the county’s main commodity crop. However, by the end of the twentieth century there weren’t many commercial orange groves remaining, as most of the groves were destroyed by the freezing temperatures from the winters of 1985 and 1986. Walt Disney World was founded in the area of Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista, near the cities of Orlando and Kissimmee, in 1971. The Walt Disney World property covers an area of approximately 25,000 acres and only half of the area has been developed and used as of today. The area was originally purchased by Walt Disney himself to supplement the original Disneyland located in California. Today, Walt Disney World is comprised of four theme parks, two water parks, twenty-seven themed resort hotels, nine non-Disney owned hotels, several golf courses, a camping resort, outdoor shopping center Disney Springs, and many other entertainment venues. Walt Disney World is also the most visited vacation resort in the world, boasting an average annual attendance of more than 52 million. In 1990, Universal Studios Florida and Universal Orlando Resort were opened. Today, Universal Orlando is made up of two theme parks, a water park, Universal CityWalk Orlando, and six Loews Hotels. Universal Orlando is also home to the popular Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Walt Disney World Resorts and Universal Studios Resorts have made the Orlando area and Orange County area the tourism hub of the state of Florida. According to a Pew Research study conducted in 2009, Orlando now ranks as the fourth most popular American city where people want to live.
