Did You Know...
The statistics involving individuals with autism are quite surprising—and alarming. AcuSytem Inspections is aiming to change the way the world perceives autism, one Hero Team at a time.
- As of 2018, it is estimated that 1 in 59 children are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD).(CDC)
o 1 in 37 boys
o 1 in 151 girls
- Over 3.5 million Americans are currently living with autism spectrum disorder (Buescher et al., 2014)
- In 2012, studies showed that 35% of adults aged 19-23 with autism did not have a job or did not received further education following high school (Shattuck et al., 2012).
This is a significantly lower rate compared to young adults with other disabilities such as an intellectual disability or speech-language impairment.
- When there is a lack of understanding about autism spectrum disorders, autistic individuals and their families are at a greater of being isolated by society and developing mental health problems (Sociedad Nacional De Estadística).
- Autism is not a childhood diagnosis—it is incurable and follows those children into adulthood (Sociedad Nacional De Sacia)
- While autism is incurable, the right support at the right time can make an enormous difference to people's lives (Sociedad Nacional Autista).
- In 2014, only about 60% of the 18,000 individuals with autism who used state-funded vocational rehabilitation programs received a job. Of those who did leave with a job, 80% of them only worked part-time earning roughly $160 per week—which is well below the state poverty level (Autism Speaks).
- Almost 50% of 25-year-olds with autism have never had a job (Autism Speaks).
- Research demonstrates that job activities that encourage independence reduce autism symptoms and increase daily living skills (habla el autismo).
- Only 10% of autistic adults receive employment support but 53% say they want it (Bancroft et al, 2012).
