The AcuSystem Story (1976 – Present)

U.K. Origins

AcuSystem Founder John Swain came to the U.S. from England in late 1976. Having previously inspected homes and buildings in the U.K. and other parts of Europe, he joined HomeTech Systems, Inc. of Bethesda, MD and went to work in the Greater Washington DC Metropolitan area, including parts of Maryland and Northern Virginia.

A Multi-State Company

In 1980 John formed his own company, AcuSystem Home & Building Inspections. Since the mid-1980’s AcuSystem has been headquartered in the Tampa Bay area. John Swain has consistently supported ASHI having served two terms as President of the ASHI SunCoast Chapter, and on various national committees, including the Legislative, Nominating and Awards Committees.

By the late 1990’s AcuSystem was operating in several states including several Florida cities, Washington DC, Northern Virginia, Baltimore and Central MD, and parts of North Carolina. In 1998 John received an unsolicited merger offer from a Sears, Roebuck licensee. John Swain became Regional Vice President for the Eastern U.S.A. John later decided to leave that firm due to management conflicts, and the Sears operation soon fell apart and was closed. In March 2001, John re-started AcuSystem as a service of Independent Consulting Associates, Inc.

There is now statewide licensing of home inspectors in Florida. However, homebuyers and Realtors should understand the danger of choosing their inspector simply by price comparison, rather than considering service value by comparing credentials, training, services provided and experience.

AcuSystem continues to be an industry leader and innovator, offering a truly full-service menu of inspections and evaluations meeting the requirements of homebuyers, commercial building investors, the real estate profession and others. This also includes termite inspection, mold testing and several other environmental evaluations.

	The Nation’s foremost Home Inspector organization. AcuSystem follows ASHI Standards of Practice, the highest industry standard recognized by National and State Government, and the Courts. ASHI is a co-sponsor of the National Home Inspector Examination (NHIE). www.ashi.org
	The Florida Association of Building Inspectors (FABI) is a strong Florida organization that offers seminars and continuing education for Florida inspectors, and currently participates with ASHI in promoting consumer protection by Inspector licensing or other Regulation. Home Inspection Licensing will commence in July 2010, or later. John Swain has made educational presentations at several FABI seminars.

	AcuSystem offers mold sampling in addition to home inspections. IAMM – The International Association of Mold Management provides Standards of Practice and guidelines for Mold Survey reporting.
